Story Pitches and News Tips
Smart Digests welcomes story pitches from freelance journalists, academics, industry professionals, and engaged readers. If you have a story idea, a lead on an under-covered topic, or a news tip that deserves investigation, please send it to us using the guidelines below.
What We’re Looking For
We are particularly interested in pitches that:
- Offer original analysis or reporting on technology, science, AI, cybersecurity, business, or environmental topics
- Bring new data or evidence to an ongoing conversation
- Highlight under-covered stories, especially those with Canadian relevance
- Challenge conventional wisdom with rigorous argumentation
- Explain complex technical developments to an educated but non-specialist audience
How to Pitch
Send your pitch to [email protected] with the subject line “PITCH: [Your Topic]”. Your pitch should include:
- A concise summary of the story (2-3 paragraphs)
- Why this story matters now (the news hook or timeliness)
- Your qualifications to write it (relevant experience, access to sources)
- Links to 2-3 previous writing samples
- Estimated length and timeline
We respond to all pitches within two weeks. If your pitch is accepted, we will discuss compensation and deadlines at that time.
Write for Us
Smart Digests maintains an open call for freelance contributors. We believe that great analysis can come from anywhere — from tenured professors, from industry practitioners, from graduate students, from independent researchers, and from journalists at every stage of their careers.
Contributor Guidelines
- Factual accuracy: All claims must be supported by credible, citable sources. We fact-check every article before publication.
- Original work: We do not publish content that has appeared elsewhere, including on personal blogs or social media.
- Transparency: Disclose any conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise, related to your topic.
- Style: Write for an educated general audience. Avoid excessive jargon; when technical terms are necessary, define them.
- Length: Standard articles run 1,500-2,500 words. Longer investigative pieces are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Corrections
If you believe we have published a factual error, please email [email protected] with the subject line “CORRECTION” and include a link to the article in question, the specific error, and supporting evidence. We take accuracy seriously and will investigate and correct verified errors promptly. See our Editorial Policy for our full corrections procedure.
